$2M Billings Home vs. $2M Home in San Diego

Sure, we all know about Billings' ridiculous "castle" house that is currently listed at $13.9 million. But what about a house for us common folk? Something affordable, like under $3M?

Of course, I'm being snarky. They say 1% of the population has all the money and I guess 1% of us Montanans could afford a multi-million dollar house? I honestly know zero people in my sphere that make enough money to buy a two million dollar house (and I know a lot of people), but builders build them and people buy them, so I guess the market is there.

Regardless, it's fun to look and it's fun to dream and I thought it would be fun to compare a Billings home with a similarly priced home in San Diego, one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country. We all joke about those pesky Californians selling their expensive, normal-sized houses in Cali and buying up property in Montana. So let's compare!

BILLINGS HOUSE

A desirable neighborhood, located on the golf course at the Yellowstone Country Club (off 62nd and Rimrock). Listed at $2,375,000, you'll get over 8,500 square feet of living on just over a 1/2 acre.

With great views, beautiful landscaping, and four bedrooms/seven bathrooms, this house is pretty spectacular.

There appears to be literally tons of stone and walnut in this home and it looks like it has a classy "Montana lodge" type vibe.

CALIFORNIA HOUSE

LA is full of smog and traffic, so let's pick a similar price-point family home in sunny San Diego for our comparison.

Listed at $2,350,000, this 5 bedroom, 5.5 bath home also comes on 1/2 acre lot and has around 5,900 sq. feet of living space. Built in the same decade as our Montana home, it's a beauty (and over 2,500 sq feet smaller than our Billings house). Keep in mind, 2,500 sq. feet is a typical, average-sized house. Both of these homes are huge.

Whiter and brighter than our Montana house, spend your $2.3M on this California home and you'll get a pool. Heated, I assume. And some decent views too. The master suite looks pretty... sweet.

Of course, you'll get a wine cellar in the California home too. Side note: What is it with wealthy people and wine cellars, anyway? I buy booze, I drink booze. No need for me to store it in a special room, but whatever. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Some of us collect fridge magnets, some of us collect expensive wines.
