Let me see if I get this straight.  Driving recklessly, speeding and endangering the public gets up to one year in prison.  Failing to register as a sex offender gets up to ten years.

This young man, Austin Kade Goings, blew off registering after his release from federal custody for sexual abuse of a minor, and so a warrant had been issued.

In late July, an undercover officer spotted Goings in a car on the Blackfeet Reservation, and they called in their law enforcement.  Of course, the instant backup flipped on the lights, the chase commenced. The pursuit reached 100 miles per hour through the Starr School community.  Goings drove over the center line, swerved and then charged towards an oncoming vehicle, forcing them into a ditch.  He raced north towards the northern border, so Border Patrol was called for the assist.  All hands on deck finally made the stop before the suspect could cross over.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office Montana District, Goings was not the only occupant in his car.  With him were another adult and two minors under age 18.  The driver was taken into custody.

After all this summer excitement, the young man had just pled guilty in court to the felony failure to register as a sex offender and to the misdemeanor attempting to elude a peace officer.  This explains the light potential sentence on the latter charge.

But with the prison time, Goings will also get a $250,000 fine for the failure to register charge plus another $2,000 for the attempt to elude.

Sorry Mr. Austin, no do overs.  Registering would have been much easier.

Messages Against Domestic and Sexual Violence from the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights Family Justice Center is a coalition of law enforcement and non-profit organizations that serve the survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Recently they invited anyone to the Yellowstone County courthouse lawn in Billings, Montana for the "Clothes Line Project" to write heartfelt messages on t-shirts addressing the issues. Here are some of the over 15 created in this inaugural event that hung and waved on the autumn breeze.
