If you have unused gift cards, you're not alone.  According to the results of a survey done by Bankrate Credit Cards, 50% of adults in the U.S. have unredeemed gift cards, store credits, or redemption vouchers.

Bankrate says the total value of those unused items equals more than $20 billion.

Here are some of the other interesting findings from Bankrate's survey:

Bankrate says that 64% of people who have an unused gift card believe they will eventually use it.

If you have unused gift cards, Bankrate suggests that you check their balance.  Some companies start imposing "inactivity fees," while others impose expiration dates.

Bankrate also says that redeeming rewards points for gift cards is usually not a great idea.  They suggest redeeming rewards for statement credit.
