Outside Montana's larger cities, it's all about our local volunteer fire departments. These groups of men and women are vital to the safety of hundreds of smaller towns in the Treasure State.
KTVH reported in 2021 that Montana has around 8,000 volunteer firemen and women, spread across "199 rural fire districts, 35 volunteer companies, and 94 volunteer departments" who act as first responders. Many of these communities lack emergency rooms or 24-hour doctors, making these volunteers even more important when life-saving response is necessary.

Funding is typically an issue with many of Montana's rural volunteer fire departments. Despite limited state and federal funds and grants, most of these volunteers are tasked with spending out-of-pocket funds on protective gear and other necessities.
Businessman Matt Schlueter, owner of Ballentine-based Hook'd On U Towing, decided to help out several "east of Billings" volunteer fire departments by raffling off a pre-owned pickup truck.
