Hip-Hop Albums That Topped the Billboard 200 in 2019

Hip-hop is the most popular genre in America; this has been true for some time now. Rap has permeated everything, from pop culture to corporate ads. Modern rap stars fly up the ranks faster than ever before—just take a look at the Billboard 200 for evidence. As of mid-July, nine hip-hop albums have hit the No. 1 spot on the chart, each of them using their unique styles to pull away from the pack.

To open 2019, XXL Freshman alum 21 Savage had the most commercially successful stretch of his career, earning his first No. 1 album with December 2018's I Am > I Was. For the next two weeks of January, 2017 XXL Freshman A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, who released his album Hoodie SZN on the same day as 21 Savage, graced the top spot. This is just his second album, but it's already platinum, word to Slim Thug. The singles are rolling too, with both "Swervin" featuring 6ix9ine and "Look Back It" both being certified double platinum and gold, respectively.

Future dropped his album The Wizrd in early January without much of a warning. No big deal; he scored yet another No. 1 debut. In March, Chicago's Juice Wrld took the pole position with Death Race For Love, his first No. 1, which sold an impressive 165,000 units out the gate. Logic's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Tyler, The Creator's Igor also had their moments in the sun atop the chart. The most recent hip-hop number No. 1 album on the Billboard 200: Dreamville's collab-a-thon, Revenge of the Dreamers III, on which the J. Cole led-label made magic with friends.
