I don't want to date myself too much here, but I was lucky enough to be a licensed driver in Montana when there was no speed limit. As a young driver, it was fantastic. Gas was still very affordable and so life on the open road was how I spent much of my free time. Constantly asking myself "Is 95 mph considered reasonable and prudent?"

According to Car and Driver

President Clinton signs the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995 into law, repealing Nixon’s speed limit and eliminating the highway funding penalty. Montana reverts to its original law, which states that drivers shall operate vehicles “ . . . at a rate of speed no greater than is reasonable and prudent.” Violations are issued at officers’ discretion.

Montana is a giant state. We don't judge distance by miles, but by how long it takes to get there. Want to drive to Bozeman? It is about 2.5 hours away. Want to drive to Billings? That is roughly 4.5 hours if you don't stop to use the restroom. That is using the current speed of 80 mph on I-90. Before 1995 the speed limit was 55 mph. Which meant getting around Montana could take far too long.
