This season, the Girl Scouts are introducing a new cookie flavor that sounds very "Montana." More on that in a moment. But first, let's explore the history of the wildly popular boxes of cookies, perhaps one of the most successful youth fundraisers ever created.

The Girl Scouts have been selling cookies for over 100 years. The first fundraiser, launched in 1917 by the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project.

Sales of the simple sugar cookie went nationwide in the 1920s, with a price of 25 to 30 cents per dozen. Ever since, the popular cookies have become an annual fixture for cookie lovers and Girl Scout supporters. Girl Scouts have only stopped selling cookies once in history - during World War II, when sugar and flour rations were in place.

Flavors have come and gone over the years.

By the 1950s, the Girl Scouts offered three flavors: Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mints. By the 1970s, fans could order several additional flavors, such as Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos and Shortbread/Trefoils cookies, along with four additional choices.

Retired Girl Scout Cookie varieties.

The standard varieties seem like they've always been on the menu, and that's great. People like things they're familiar with. However, the company has experimented with dozens of special offerings over the decades. Some stuck around for several years, while others had very limited runs. Do you remember some of these discontinued flavors?

  • Snaps (1994 - 1997)
  • Dulce De Leche (2008 - 2014)
  • Savanah Smiles (2011 - 2019)

The new 2026 Girl Scout Cookie variety is called Exploremores

Exploremores™ sounds like a catchy slogan that the folks at VisitMT would come up with, and I love it. The Girl Scouts describe the new cookie as "a rocky road ice cream–inspired sandwich cookie, filled with delicious flavors of chocolate, marshmallow, and toasted almond–flavored crème." Yum. I want to explore putting some Exploremores™ in my mouth.

How much a box of Girl Scout cookies costs throughout the years

February is the time of year we see Girl Scouts out hustling hard to sell their scrumptious cookies. We all know that the price of a box has gone up, but do you know how much the price has increased? Thanks to finance.yahoo.com, we now know.
