Several brands of popular above-ground pools are under recall, after reportedly causing the deaths of nine toddlers across the US. Approximately 5 million of these pools, sold under various brand names by numerous retailers, are impacted by the recall. See the brands/models listed below.

When I heard the news about the recall, I went to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website to find out more. I'm not super concerned about my kids drowning in our pool. They are both great swimmers and are far beyond toddler age. No, part of me was secretly hoping the recall was so significant that the company would send me a new pool, haha.

The companies are not sending out free replacement pools (instead, you get a repair kit). However, if you have a relatively inexpensive, above-ground pool, especially with younger children in the household, you should investigate further. The brands and models under the recall include:

  • Bestway - Power Steel and Power Pro models sold between 2008 and 2024
  • Coleman - Power Steel sold between 2008 and 2024
  • Intex - Metal Frame Pools and Ultra Frame Pools sold between 2002 and 2012
  • Intex - Prism Frame and Ultra XTR Frame Pools, sold only at Intexcorp.com and Walmart from 2024 to 2025
  • Polygroup - Summer Waves, Summer Escape, Funsicle, Sand n Sun, and Blue Wave pools, sold from 2006 to 2025.

The pools were sold manufactured in China and sold at Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Toys “R” Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco, and BJ’s (among others), as well as online at Amazon.com, Wayfair.com and Bestway USA, Intex, Funsicle, and Summer Waves websites.

The recall affects 48-inch and taller above-ground pools that use compression straps. These straps wrap around the pool on the outside of the supporting poles and may create a foothold, allowing a child to access the pool and drown. To see if your pool is impacted by the recall, find out more HERE. The companies will send a free repair kit (essentially a rope that goes around the bottom of the pool, replacing the strap).
