If you've lived in Montana for some time, you know just how beautiful it can be, especially on a ranch or farm at sunup or sundown, right? It's breathtaking. For Montana farmers and ranchers, it's the very land that feeds us and makes us who we are.
Unfortunately for proud Montanans who would love for Montana to maintain its natural aura, tech companies around the country look at this same land and see something different: Montana AI data centers.
"The Montana Way of Life"
The "Montana Way of Life" is something we all live by, right? I'll even take it a step further - I've lived here only around six months and I'm still learning about the way of life here and doing my best to approach it respectfully.

A few of the core values I've learned are a part of that way of life include independence, respecting the land, and doing things the "right way."
It's why I am baffled at how many tech companies look at Montana as a means to an end more than they look at it as a state of hardworking Americans, powering the country with our strong ag production off the beautiful and natural land.

And look, I get it - for some people, AI data centers present opportunities that otherwise wouldn't be possible if they weren't in Montana. Some get excited at the thought of new jobs, tax revenue for our local infrastructure, and even revitalizing the older industrial sites of Montana.

On the other hand, many have cited the long list of negative environmental impacts AI data centers bring to an area. Between the massive water and power consumption, the strain these data centers can have on the industrial infrastructure, and even the noise or traffic problems it can create, some feel it's just not worth having.
Which Montana Towns Are Being Targeted as Sites for AI Data Centers?
I searched various local news outlets and other sources to find towns in Montana that tech companies are proposing to put up data centers in. One town on the list technically is for cryptocurrency mining, but with that said - who's to say that isn't a flare to other tech companies to move in?
