If you live near Billings Logan International Airport, do not be surprised if you see smoke or flames coming from the airport campus this week. It may be noticeable from nearby homes, businesses, and roads, but airport officials want people to know that the smoke and flames will be part of planned training exercises.

The airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team is running FAA mandated live burn training exercises. Airport officials say the training is planned, controlled, routine, and will produce visible smoke and flames at the airport campus.

When to Expect Smoke at Billings Logan Airport

The first training session is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. A second session will happen early Thursday, September 24, from 5 a.m. until 7 a.m.

If you live near the airport, are driving through the area, or are heading out early Thursday morning, you may see smoke or flames during those scheduled training times. The airport shared its full live burn training notice here.

What Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Means

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, often called ARFF, is the specialized fire and rescue service used at airports. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, its ARFF resources cover training, vehicles, and other aviation fire and rescue requirements.

The FAA requires airports with certain commercial air carrier operations to provide aircraft rescue and firefighting services. The agency also has specific operational requirements and training guidance for ARFF personnel.

Why Billings Airport Is Running Live Burn Exercises

Billings Logan International Airport says its live burn exercises are required by the FAA and are performed regularly as part of routine operational training. The scheduled exercises are planned and controlled, but they will create visible smoke and flames.

So if you spot smoke in the sky near the airport Tuesday night or early Thursday morning, you will know what is happening. For the dates, times, and details directly from the airport, read Billings Logan International Airport’s official notice.
