I always assumed kids around here probably leaned toward the classic Halloween costumes. You know, a few witches, a handful of superheroes, maybe a cowboy or two for good measure. But after digging into Google’s Frightgeist data, which tracks year over year costume search trends, I can officially say I was wrong. People in Billings are apparently dreaming big this year. Dramatic big.

Billings Is Secretly Obsessed With Bo Peep and Dinosaurs

According to the data, the number one trending costume in the Billings area is Bo Peep from Toy Story. I respect a character who can rock a bonnet and a shepherd’s crook with confidence. Right behind her is Padmé from Star Wars, followed by Deadpool, Eliza from Hamilton and then...the mighty inflatable T-Rex.

I didn't realize how popular the T-Rex still was until about a week ago when my son announced that he wanted our entire family to go trick-or-treating as matching dinosaurs. And because he is 10 and still actually wants his parents with him on Halloween night, I ordered three inflatable T-Rex costumes before he could change his mind. There is no way I am wasting one of the last years he thinks we are cool.

K-Pop Demon Hunters Take Over America’s Costume Searches

While Billings is over here channeling toy box nostalgia and prehistoric power, the rest of the country has gone completely all in on characters from KPop Demon Hunters. I’ll admit, I had to Google them. The top five trending costumes nationwide are Rumi, Zoey, Mira, Jinu and Baby Saja, all from the same franchise.

Apparently Rumi is responsible for dragon braids and purple hair flooding search bars. Zoey is driving interest in space buns. Mira is bringing back pink wigs and yellow skirts. Jinu is the top trending “demon” costume. And Baby Saja has single-handedly pushed searches for pink argyle sweaters to a twelve-year high.

Kids Are Fully Committed to Characters Most Adults Have Never Heard Of

If you are shopping for kids’ costumes, prepare to hear unfamiliar character names. The top searched costumes for kids are Rumi, Labubu, Zoey, Mira and Jinu. Translation: if you see little ones running around dressed like pastel mini warriors and you have no idea what they are supposed to be, just smile and pretend you know.

Even the Dogs Have Joined the Costume Craze This Year

I had to laugh when I saw that dog costumes are trending too. Labubu tops the list for pets, followed by Derpy the Tiger, chicken costumes, IHOP-themed outfits and Krypto the Superdog. Somewhere out there, a golden retriever is already training for battle in a plush tiger suit.

So What Are You Wearing This Year?

Whether you are going full sci-fi princess, nostalgic movie character or inflatable dinosaur family like us, it is clear that Billings is ready to have fun this Halloween. I love seeing people get into it. If our sidewalks are filled with tiny Rumi warriors and slow-moving T-Rexes wobbling down the street, I am all for it.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to practice walking in a seven-foot dinosaur suit without wiping out on someone’s front steps.
