If you’ve never been to a Day of the Dead celebration in Billings, this might be the year to go. It’s one of those rare events that feels both joyful and deeply meaningful at the same time, a weekend where art, music, and memory come together to celebrate life and those we’ve loved and lost.

The celebration happens Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Montana Pavilion at MetraPark, and it’s completely free to attend (though donations are always appreciated).

Honoring Loved Ones at the Community Ofrenda

One of the most beautiful parts of Day of the Dead Billings is the public altar, or “ofrenda.” Guests are invited to bring a photo (up to 8x10) of their departed loved ones to place on the altar in their honor. Organizers ask that you bring copies rather than irreplaceable originals, but they’ll have frames and materials available so you can decorate your display however you’d like. It’s a touching sight, hundreds of photos surrounded by candles, flowers, and keepsakes, each one telling a story of someone who was loved deeply.

Show Your Spirit with Face Paint and Costumes

This event is all about color, creativity, and connection. You’ll find face painting and costume contests for all ages, with separate categories for kids, teens, and adults. The best part? You don’t need to be a pro, just have fun with it. YouTube is full of great tutorials for Day of the Dead makeup ideas if you want some inspiration before you go.

Create a Personal Tribute in the Pop-Up Cemetery

Another unique feature is the Pop-Up Cemetery, where families can decorate a small cardboard “plot” with flowers, photos, and other decorations in honor of someone special. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate their memory, and spots are first-come, first-served. To reserve a space, you can email info@DayoftheDeadBillings.com.

Join the Indoor Procession of Remembrance

This year’s Day of the Dead Procession will take place inside the Montana Pavilion, making it easy for everyone to join in or watch from the sidelines. The non-motorized walk circles the venue with photos, costumes, and symbols of remembrance. Lineup begins at 4 p.m. near the stage, and the procession starts at 4:30 p.m.

Family Crafts, Games, and Activities for All Ages

If you’re bringing the family, there’s plenty to keep everyone busy. There will be craft stations for making paper flowers, sugar skulls, headbands, and pipe cleaner skeletons, plus coloring sheets and art displays to show off your creations. For some friendly competition, check out the family games, including Day of the Dead-themed board games and field games that both kids and adults can enjoy together.

Sending Messages of Love to the Spirits

As the event winds down, visitors will be invited to write messages to the spirits, personal notes meant for loved ones who’ve passed on. At 5 p.m., those messages are set aflame, symbolically sending them on their way. It’s a peaceful, moving moment that brings the entire celebration full circle.
