There are countless videos of bears, raccoons, and other animals messing with or trying to get into cars. They can be cute but very destructive at times.

Someone can break into your car if you are hiking or camping in the backcountry, but an animal is more likely to try and access your vehicle.

Even though bears seem to do the most damage to vehicles, one animal is the more likely suspect.

Marmots are essentially massive ground squirrels that live in the mountains across Montana.

These little guys are curious, adorable, and seem innocent, but that's not always normal.

Marmots can be very destructive when it comes to vehicles.

How? They get under cars and chew on tires, wires, and anything else that they might think is food.

How To Protect Your Vehicles From Marmots?

It might seem weird, but it works.

National Park Rangers suggest to those leaving their vehicles to go on long hikes or backcountry camping to wrap their cars in tarps.

Why? It's simple and effective.

The old technique was to wrap your car in chicken wires, but marmots have learned how to get around that. A tarp has worked perfectly.

Just drive over a large tarp and then wrap your car. This way, the tarp protects your wheels and undercarriage. Marmots won't spend time trying to chew their way through a tarp.

The next time you see a vehicle wrapped in a tarp, you know why.
