Breed Specific Legislation

Guess what?? Any dog can bite a human regardless of the breed. Even our "precious" Goldens and Labs can bite people. I worked at a doggie day care for years. The Yellow Labrador Retrievers were the most aggressive in the facility I worked for. Wouldn't expect that, right? But not the Pit Bulls. They weren't even allowed to come enjoy doggie day care in the first place, but why? 

BSL-B (Breed Specific Legislation-Bans)

According to American Veterinary Medical Association,

"It is the dog's individual history, behavior, general size, number of dogs involved, and the vulnerability of the person bitten that determines the likelihood of biting and whether a dog will cause a serious bite injury. Breed-specific bans are a simplistic answer to a far more complex social problem, and they have the potential to divert attention and resources from more effective approaches."

Frequently, breed-specific legislation focuses on dogs with a certain appearance or physical characteristics, instead of an actual breed. That's why there's a thing called "a  temperament test." If the term "racist" is for humans, then "breedist" is for dogs...

Kat, the Kindest Woman with a Kindred Spirit

Kat (Kathy) Clarkin started a non-profit rescue strictly for Pitbulls and bully breeds and it's called the Montana Pittie Project. Kat started this rescue 7 years ago and became official as of 2020. People tend to abuse Bully breeds more than others. Kat said enough is enough, and took action by starting this organization which is gaining traction.

Kat started this organization 7 years ago after seeing a Pitbull in a kill shelter in San Bernardino, California. Don't get it twisted folks... Kat's from Montana, but that doesn't mean she can't support dogs from California who were about to be euthanized based solely on their breed.

Kat hand picks homeless dogs (all "bully breeds") from kill shelters in Texas and California by doing a temperament test on the dog. If a dog has been severely abused, their temperament could be aggressive. But for the most part, millions of humans think Pitties and Bullies look aggressive all the time- that's not the case. 

With a little education on dog temperament/ attitude/ and facial expressions we can change this stigma against these poor dogs.  Baby Rhino's face pictured below is curious and happy. Not aggressive...! Look how skinny he was. He's finally gaining his weight! 😍

Kat pays a person to drive the dog from Texas to the next person. This next person drives the dog and drops it to the next person in the caravan. It's a lot of pick-ups and drop-offs. Finally, the gorgeous doggies end up at her Montana Pittie Project Rescue located in Saint Ignatius, MT.

Several people (and you can be one too) foster the bullies until someone adopts them. This operation takes time, money and resources. Kat says, "It takes way more than fostering- we need legislation protecting bully breed dogs."

Just one shelter in Texas takes 100 relinquished dogs/day! Read that again. More than 1,000 dogs are euthanized PER DAY in Texas. That's why Kat chose to rescue those dogs and they are brought here to Big Sky Country with the help of a team.

How to Help Montana Pittie Project with the Founder Kat

Donations are always welcome and much needed! But what Kat wants most for this project is for the homeless and adoptable Bullies to be shared on social media. Let's spread the word about these lovable babies!

Kat uses the donations to hire veterinarians, get dogs' vaccines, supplies, and for spay/ neuter clinics. She is very passionate about lessening this breed's stigma. Because that is what is Montanans- a stigma!  Open your mind. Be loving- not hateful. A little education goes a long way.
