Would You Ever Leave Facebook?

I know the thought of there being a mass exodus on Facebook seems pretty ridiculous, but there was a point in time in which I would have said the same thing about Myspace.  Any platform has the possibility of being replaced by the "new thing".  Facebook just typically buys the "new thing" before it can become the "new thing".

For the most part, I've enjoyed my Facebook experience, but I do have the same complaints that many of us have; mainly regarding privacy.  I've always thought it would be nice if we had a decentralized social media platform (meaning that no company owns it), and there have been plenty of failed efforts, but there is one that is gaining a little momentum.  Mastodon is an open-source social media platform.  Open Source means the code that makes it work is publically available.  Anybody can use it, make changes to it, etc.  There are some caveats, but I won't get into that here.  The main point is that no one owns the software.  There are no ads and no large scale data mining.

The odds are heavily stacked against any new software to dethrone the behemoth social media king, but if it happens, I hope it's something like this.  Something community oriented and built simply to share information and made for the purpose of exploiting it.

For the record, I would happily pay a monthly fee to use Facebook if there were an option to make it function as described above.
