An Open Letter: Billings Needed to Hear This Message
I’ve officially lived in Billings for 6 months and I have to do my quarterly gratitude post plus some insight into a radio DJ's life.
Dear Billings Residents and listeners of the Morning Mix 97.1,
Without your kindness, I don't know what I'd do. Moving life to a new place can feel quite strange; I was navigating the unknown, and still am. My cohost Michael and I launched this brand new morning radio show, learning each other’s chemistry, and it’s worked out well for us! Not many radio DJ’s can say this: They immediately jived with the new cohost. I've seen shows crash and burn due to a lack of chemistry.
The events Mix 97.1 holds, whether it’s a remote broadcast at a local business, or emceeing the Billings Outlaws Football games, to St. Patty’s Pub Golf and concerts - you guys are why I do this job.
It’s the interaction with listeners that sets my soul on fire! Sometimes it can seem like a one-way conversation being on your radio, but when we get to meet face to face and I see the pure joy and excitement from you - that's the secret sauce.
Not going to lie- winters in Montana are rough! I thought I was used to frigid temps, but I quickly learned that I need more layers, better boots and to always wear gloves. This learning curve of the weather, culture, the political landscape of this new place was hard on my soul at first. This is the smallest city I’ve ever lived in... I know that probably sounds weird. But it’s true! Trying to find where I fit in has been tough.
In all honesty, some people want to see me fail. For some reason jealousy takes over, people try to slander public voices, like radio DJs, and it’s literally dealing with bullies as an adult. I have to remember that’s just noise. I am great at my job, and I’m allowed to have confidence with this because it was my hard work and persistence that lead me to my dreams coming true. Take what you want from this next statement.
My life mottos are:
Confidence is contagious and jealousy is a sick disease. Gossip is for the birds and a waste of breath.
I’m a loving person and just want people to feel their best and be the best version of themselves. It’s a lifelong process of growth and reflection. What we put out to the world; we get back tenfold. The universe just knows when we are genuine.
Please just know, no matter what you’re going through, that I’m rooting for you. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader, reminding you to make it just one more day, one more hour, one more minute. One breath at a time. Thanks for having me Montana. I'm honored. 🖤
Much love Montana Fam,
Nikki V.
