Many people in history have made contributions to perfecting the radio waves and its frequencies. Who was the first to do so you ask? It was Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi who proved practical communication over the radio. Mr. Marconi sent and received a telegram over the first radio signal in history from Italy back in 1895.

FUN FACT: The first radio station in America was established in Pittsburgh in 1919, and the FM radio made its BIG debuted back in 1939. Broadcasting over radio didn't go digital until 1994, when radio stations started streaming via the internet. AT this time, it was accompanied by the first internet-only 24-hour radio station!

In 2011 February 13 was officially proclaimed as World Radio Day! This date was chosen by UNESCO’s director general as it was the anniversary date of the very first United Nations international broadcasting service, which was created on February 13, 1946.
