Billings Symphony to Host Acclaimed Pianist Honoring 1942 Concert
The Billings Symphony Orchestra, along with world renowned pianist Mackenzie Melemed, will bring the final recital of Sergei Rachmaninoff to life once again at the Billings Depot on Thursday, December 1st at 7 p.m. Experience the famed 1942 recital from Carnegie Hall from your local symphony as well as one of the best, most consummate solo artists in the entire world.
The concert is a part of Billings Symphony's Sukin Series
The Sukin Series is a series of concerts that the Billings Symphony states, "invites a new and diverse audience to experience chamber music from around the globe by world-renowned artists, while appealing to even the most cultured soul." The first of these concerts showcases Rachmaninoff's final solo recital.
Rachmaninoff's final solo piano recital took place at Carnegie Hall in New York City on November 7th, 1942; however, it was not his last public concert. That would happen 3 months later in February of 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Rachmaninoff would later die of melanoma in March, just one month later.
Mackenzie Melemed to headline this showcase.
Melemed is an internationally known pianist. According to a press release from the Billings Symphony Orchestra, Melemed's interest in piano was started at the age of three when he got a keyboard from a yard sale. Needless to say, his accomplishments have been extraordinary; he's won the Leo B. Ruiz Carnegie Hall Prize as well as the Arthur Rubenstein Prize, and he's performed all across the world, including the White House.
