When entering Spitz Mediterranean Street Food at 313 N Broadway, my first impression of the business was "Trendy."  The decor is colorful and artsy.  Bundles of shop lights with intentional tangles of wires illuminated tables with stool-like seating.  A clever addition to the dining area is a selection of tabletop games to play with drinks or during meals.

The atmosphere is tailored for the hip, younger generations, but older patrons were in with me for lunch this day.

Spitz Mediterranean Street Food has a focused menu.  Exotic doner wraps, salad and meal bowls and Gyros, with vegetarian and vegan options.  How about French fries with a Greek flair.  Your takeout meal can include craft beers, sangria or wine.  The selection is very vegetable-centered so you are sure to get 2-4 of the recommended five servings of fruits and veggies we are supposed to have.

A Meal in One Hand: the Gyro

I went with a reliable Gyro, and this one has a unique twist.  The French fries topped the fillings inside, all wrapped and ready for on the go.  A diner can have a seat and pick out the fries to munch on, like I did, or they can gobble it all in one hand while playing a game or working with the other hand, or while walking to a meeting.

This Gyro has beef and lamb with a slightly tangy Berliner sauce and a feta spread.  It is completely different from any other seasonings, defying description.  The spicing is pleasantly warm without any burn.  I ate the whole meal and didn't need supper that night.

The best word to describe the Spitz cuisine is exactly in the name: Mediterranean.  It is a welcome change of pace from the burgers and American fare.  It is a culinary push on the envelope.  Dining a little outside the box.

Spitz in Billngs should capitalize on its location right across the street from Alberta Bair Theatre.  While it normally closes at 9 p.m., after special performances it should stay open for audience members wanting a sangria or beer or dinner after the show.  Take a dollar or two off the tab if one shows that night's ticket.  Advertise in the program.  Should stay open later for Billings Artwalk any First Friday.  Any downtown event is a golden opportunity to cap it all off at Spitz.
