Montana Scam Victims Will Get $700k from Kalispell Man
Justice can be tough to get in terms of money from scammers. But some will be coming for those swindled by Kevin Moore.
John Keven Moore had taken more than $2 million dollars from investors in his fake companies. Big Sky Mineral Resources LLC was a facade about dealing in oil and gas leases, and Glacier Gala sold a story of buying and selling art. Both were Ponzi schemes; Moore had used the funds to pay off prior investors and to cover his personal spending and very expensive properties.
A jury found Moore guilty of 21 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and false statement crimes in 2018 and received over 10 years in prison.
Since then the U.S. Attorney's Financial Litigation Division have sought restitution for his victims. They just announced recovering $700,000 from the sale of a ranch in Valley County under another business, Milk River Hunting Preserve LLC, now defunct. The announcement did not mention when the victims will receive their portion of the restitution.
This is a good first step and the FLD is not done with Moore. He is still ordered to pay an additional $2.2 million in restitution and forfeit another $1.2 million. He will be very poor for a long time, after he finishes his prison term.
So for the victims of Moore's crimes, I'm sorry you are going through this and I appreciate your patience. I hope you receive all the money you had lost.
And for everybody else, please remember that you can find scammers under any rock. They have a new fraud in mind before they have breakfast. And many look and talk very professional. If it smells fishy, it is fishy. Trust your gut and don't give them your money. And if you do, document the transactions. Give the FLD all the evidence you can so they can assist you.
