I could barely believe what I read in Michael Foth's article, that some people steal office supplies from work to cover their children's school needs, and other dumpster dive.  First of all, that's a good way to make matters worse by getting fired.  Second, for Billings residents, there is a program beginning soon to help provide some of the supplies.

A collaboration between the agencies listed above are gearing up to give away backpacks full of supplies.  Each pack is specifically assembled according to the grade of the youngster entering school this fall and the materials requested by the school district.

Students can even pick out a favorite color of backpack, or maybe find that pop star, video game or superhero pack they simply must have.

How to Sign Up?  Two ways:

Signups for this Back to School distribution program starts August 1st.  You can stop by Family Service at 3927 1st Avenue South during regular business hours.  But if you have a capable smartphone, you can just scan the QR code in the flyer above and follow its directions.

When I called Family Service, I learned they have plenty of backpacks but...

Supplies Are Needed!

If you want to help out in this budget-saving endeavor, there are options.  Family Service will accept monetary donations specifically designated for Back to School.  You can also purchase and drop off school supplies at the United Way facility.

And for all the businesses in the area, here's an idea.  Clear out your supply cabinets of new office items you rarely use and donate them to this Back-to-School distribution.  Then tell your parental employees they can sign up there, and stop trying to be sneaky getting away with only a little.  They can pick up a lot more legitimately.
