Nyx's Notes, Volume 1 Chapter 3: the Vet

With a new pet rescued from the outdoors, a quick check-up with a vet is always a good idea.  So six days in her new home, we brought Nyx to the Skyview Veterinary Hospital in Billings Heights.

The nice ladies at SVH want a safe entrance for a kitten, so they asked us to call a few minutes before coming to ensure the lobby area is clear of rambunctious dogs on leashes.  They don't want to terrify a kitty.  Cats must come in carriers.

Nyx knew something was up when we walked into an exam room.  She hunkered to the other end of the carrier from the door.  With a little coaxing from Edan she braved this new world.

A cat owner herself, the vet tech Lindsey just gushed over little Nyx.  On a proper scale, she weighed in at one pound 14 ounces.  Lindsey asked about her bowel movements, if she has diarrhea.  Edan gave quite the description: "Turds in gravy."  (I may never eat canned beef stew again)

Dr. Jill Paul came next and look in the ears for mites, felt along the little body for anything unusual, then used a stethoscope to listen for any congestion in the lungs and heart.

The trick to withstanding a chilly stethoscope?  A ready-made fur coat.

Dr. Paul determined Nyx's age at approximately six weeks.  The only treatment she received was a topical medicine to de-worm and ward off any fleas or ticks.  No vaccinations yet, that's coming in a few weeks.

And of course, after being such a good kitty for not hissing or scratching, Nyx sampled a little treat in a tube.

As of this post, Nyx is in excellent health.  She spent the rest of the day playing, and I learned that denim jeans are the best protection from the needle claws.

The Skyview Veterinary Hospital is located at 1632 Gleneagles Blvd. in Billings Heights.  Their phone is 406-256-3511.  Call for an appointment.  They make the pet's visit as welcome and stress-free as possible.  They answer all owner's questions and I'm sure they've heard them all, even the goofy ones.
