Billings Fire Department To Teach Kids On Fire Safety

Fire is a serious danger for everyone, especially if you do not know what to do in an emergency. That's why the Billings Fire Department "Fire Prevention Bureau" has teamed up with Billings SD2 to educate the kids of our community!

BFD is bringing a series of engaging, age-appropriate lessons and interactive learning stations to elementary students at SD2 schools.

Deputy Fire Marshal Becky Biggins shared her joy for this program:

After a year and a half of planning and preparation, we are so excited to implement this program and get back into the schools to see Billings students in grades K-5 every year!

Right now, the program is in its initial stages. Officially named the "Billings Fire Safety Squad", they'll be visiting eight schools between now and the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

If this program pilot ends successfully, the city has plans to return to schools for the 2024-2025 school year... making stops at ALL 21 elementary schools in SD2.

Didn't The Fire Department Do This Already?

Yes, but only focusing on second graders. Going forward, BFD's Fire Safety Squad is focused on educating EVERY student in SD2, from Kindergarten through 5th grade, having students participate in the Billings Fire Safety Squad program.

The Safety Squad model is a tried and tested way to teach elementary school students lessons about safety. The curriculum for both the classroom portion as well as the fire department visit is scaffolded to contain age-appropriate messaging about these important topics.
