From the Billings Police Department:

On February 5th, 2024, around 9:23 AM, The Billings Police Department responded to an assault, which occurred the evening before, at a residence in the 200 block of Westchester Square North.

Officers were advised of a staff member at a group home who had assaulted a 37-year-old male resident who was disabled.

The victim had to be transported to an area hospital due to the injuries received during the assault from the group home staff member.

The suspect, Dante Garriott, a 19-year-old local male, was contacted by Officers on February 5th, 2024, and subsequently arrested by BPD. Dante Garriott was initially charged with Aggravated Assault and remanded into the Yellowstone County Detension Facility.

Over a week later, on February 16th, 2024, the investigating detectives were notified that the 37-year-old victim of the group home assault had passed away.

It was determined the injuries sustained during the assault were contributing factors in the victim's passing.

BPD worked with the Yellowstone County Attorney's Office to amend the initial charge of aggravated assault to a deliberate homicide.

Garriott was seen in District Court for this charge on March 7th, 2024.
