Starbucks Is Paying College Tuition For Its Employees
I love podcasts and I couldn't believe what I heard when I was listening to one of my favorite weekly check-in shows: Starbucks is helping to pay the college tuition for its employees. Score.
In this episode of It's Been a Minute with Sam Sanders, Sam talks to Sophia, a Starbucks employee living in California, who's taking college courses at Arizona State University online. She said she's set to graduate in December 2020 with a degree in mass communications and all she's had to pay for is books.
Of course, there are a few caveats, but honestly, I don't think they're that bad. I mean, most employers just want you to have a degree, right?
1) You need to be a Starbucks employee (obvi) and work or the company for at least three months. But, you don't have to be a full-time employee, which is great because--homework, amirite?
2) It looks like you have to enroll in Arizona State University's online programs and complete a FAFSA. This means you wouldn't get to pick which school you went to, and you wouldn't have any classes that you would physically attend. That's probably fine for a lot of people, but if you like a classroom with a teacher and fellow students, well...
3) Register for classes. There may be some degree limitations; they offer 80 undergraduate programs, which is a lot, but you might want to check to make sure you can study what you want to.
4) The money--here's what they say:
"After scholarships and financial aid, any out-of-pocket tuition costs you have paid are reimbursed directly into your paycheck at the end of the semester. *Reimbursement does not include books and equipment, special class fees and personal expenses." -Starbucks.com
Overall, it sounds like a pretty sweet deal. If this sounds like your jam, you can get the details from Starbucks right here.
If you could have a business help pay your college tuition, who would you want to work for?
