How Many Montanans Were Born In Montana? You May Be Surprised.

One of the things that many Montanans are proud of is actually being a Montanan—and why wouldn't they be?

I mean, Montana is a special place that has been romanticized in movies, books, and songs.  It's the type of place where you can still find adventure around every corner.  A place where folks are honest, look you in the eye, and greet you with a firm handshake.

Lots of folks reminisce about the "good ole days", however, here in Montana, many of our towns and communities are still in the middle of them.

With that being said, it's certainly no surprise that people want to come here and experience all that Montana is. But how many Montanans are actually from Montana? What is the percentage of the population that was actually born here?

The data may surprise you.

According to Landgiest, only 53.8 percent of the current residents of the state were actually born in Montana. Even more surprising than that, it's still the highest percentage when it comes to the other states that make up the northwestern part of the country.

States like Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming all have a lower percentage when it comes to residents that were actually born in those states. Check out these percentages below:

• Idaho 47 percent
• Oregon 45.9 percent
• Washington 46.7 percent
• Wyoming 42.4 percent

What do we take away from this? Well, I guess one way to look at it is, that even though almost half of Montanans weren't born in Montana, we still have more of our native sons and daughters than those states to the south and west of us.

That has to make all of those folks who don't like it when people move here from somewhere else a little happy, right?
