Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste”: a Video Splatter Fest
The Disclaimer at the Beginning is the Fair Warning
I was a little surprised to see this message at the beginning of the video with this: "...depicts graphic violence which may be offensive to some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised." This part is right.
I'm sure many pop listeners caught the latest release from Sabrina Carpenter, "Taste" on YouTube. The song is a message to the new girlfriend that the exe's influence is still on the boyfriend. "You'll just have to taste me when he's kissing you."
At least that's what I think the song is about. The video is such a bloody spectacle that it's hard to pay attention to the song and the lyrics.
The video is a gory montage of ways to horribly kill someone. Could call this video "Sociopathy 101." The mini-movie stars Carpenter and Jenna Ortega of Wednesday fame as the two girlfriends fighting to the death for the same man. The methods include a shotgun, knife to the eye, chainsaw, defibrillator, even voodoo dolls.
Yet neither woman dies. Both recover fully to continue the carnage. That provides the comical suspension of disbelief, with the action/slasher/horror trope that the characters can get very wounded and still fight on. It turns into almost cartoonish absurdity, like the adult cartoons that have been around for years.
And the blood! This music video is a few minutes crash course in special effects and make-up for stomach-turning, awesome results. The ending has a twist a final bad pun.
This short musical film is not for little children. A reminder for all kids and adults: these stunts are done by trained professionals; do not try them at home.
Of course, now that I have written about the video and song, everybody reading this will go check it out.
