Holidays for Montanans, August 3-4
Going to be another hot weekend in the state. What not-so-major holidays can guide your Saturday and Sunday while trying to keep cool?
August 3rd:
National Watermelon Day
A great fruit in the shade of a tree. Perhaps let one sit in the freezer for a couple hours before cutting and serving. Watermelon, like revenge, is a dish best served cold.
National Grab Some Nuts Day
Need some protein but don't wanna fire up a grill or stove? Just grab some nuts. A guest host this last Friday gave me some lemon candied almonds. Mmm mmm good. Now that I think about it, trail mix has nuts and would go well with watermelon in the shade.
And if you want to do something casual this weekend there is...
National Disc Golf Day
According to Nationaltoday.com where I get these holidays, disc golf is the 4th largest sport. Really? Football, baseball, basketball...disc golf? It's also the fastest growing sport in the world.
I've played the game. All the fun and aggravation of golf without lugging a bag of clubs. Go to a municipal park and odds are you'll find these chain baskets and disc golfers about. I've threatened to cut down trees because they had blocked my disc's flight.
Mead Day
After a day in the park or in air conditioning, you can enjoy this unique honey alcohol at Bearded Viking Mead Company in Columbus. Numerous varieties and flavors to suit your taste, from light to strong. Please enjoy responsibly.
August 4th:
American Family Day, National Friendship Day and Hooray for Kids Day
Celebrate all the wonderful people in your life, whether related or not, from any and all ages. And a good way to party is with...
National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
Bake up a batch today with lots of chocolate chips. Add some chopped nuts to continue the holiday from the 3rd. The kids can have cookies with cold milk, while the adults enjoy cookies with...
National White Wine Day
Pairs well with any dessert, after all.
U.S. Coast Guard Birthday
Created in 1790 when Congress authorizes the construction of ten cutters (a type of sailing ship) to protect the nation's revenue on the seas. The Guard was proposed by then Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. Yeah, the main character in the musical; now you know what soundtrack you can play for the day.
